János Kornai is working on a series of papers contrasting the real and observable advantageous and disadvantageous, attractive and repulsive, features of the capitalist system with the hopes and expectations of the East-Europeans in the pre-1990s. The research is going to scrutinize the persistent current of ideas expecting or demanding “neither communism, nor capitalism, but a third road!” He will argue against the nostalgia felt by some in the post-socialist countries, against the distorted historical memory forgetting about the grave abuses and crimes of the previous political system, and against the socialistic utopias emerging in the educated circles of the West. The research evaluates the successes and failures of post-socialist transition, and analyzes the effect of the global financial crisis on the region’s future development.

A recently finished paper in this series of studies is discussing the relationship between the system (capitalism or socialism) and the nature and speed of technical progress.
